Materuni Waterfall is actually known as Nambe Waterfall locally, which means ‘first-born’. It has this name as it is the first waterfall that comes from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. However, for location purposes, this waterfall is known as Materuni, which is the name of the village it is in. Materuni Village is named after the Materu tribe that is the majority in the village.

Materuni Village Socio economic activities.

Farming, due to the Mount Kilimanjaro volcanic fertile soil and high amount of rainfall, supports locals to grow Coffee Arabica and different banana species which is their main source of income.

NOTE.
Do not hold Chameleons while at Materuni or any other places either advised by locals or your guide.
  • Chameleons are taken from their natural habitat so tourists can snuggle them, to keep these opportunities available for tourists, chameleons are constantly disturbed, stressed even injured who knows, while people can’t see the cruelty directly in front of them, there’s cruelty happening behind the scenes, and the consequences can be tragic, as they can change they behavior or die as a result
  • Also Chameleons or other wild animals do not like being held and they don't enjoy it, also it is against their right to be free from any kind of human disturbance and stress.
  • It perpetuates a cycle of abuse.
  • When people take a picture with a wild animal from nature and then post it on their social media, the photo makes others believe this is acceptable behavior. So please while around lest say no to animal helding.
